3 Items Your Backyard Is Missing for Spring

Backyard BBQ

For those who experience all four seasons, spring is a wonderful time to come out of your dark caves, stretch your legs and readjust your eyes to the world outside. It feels like the birth of a new age, the dawning of new life or better yet, the start of what you’ve been longing for since the first snow fall; grilling and that savory taste of fresh BBQ.

There’s nothing better than stepping outside in shorts after a long hibernation period, firing up the grill and filling the air with the smoky aroma of BBQ. Even if you’re unfamiliar with this routine, now is the time to acquaint yourself with the wonders of grilling.

Whether you’ve been counting down the seconds to grill again or you’re new to ‘cue, there are three things you need prior to grilling, which will make the grilling experience all the better.

(Updated) Grilling Space

Those who know their way around a grill most likely have a nice set up. Some might even consider it a sanctuary. Even if it is nice, you should probably update it or make it better. Not saying your current set up isn’t good enough, but try spicing things up. Add a little flavor to your grilling space, such as a chair to lounge in with a cooler full of brews next to it or upgrade your grill entirely. I know you’ve been eyeballing that granddaddy of them all.

If this is your first grilling attempt, then you need to invest in a nice grilling space. Don’t splurge, but don’t be that poor schlub on the block with a pile of meat bigger than his grill. Get a nice, cozy space so you can focus on your meats, while enjoying yourself in the process because that’s what it’s all about; you and your meat.

Harvest Garden

Nothing complements some good old BBQ than some garden fresh vegetables. Plant a small harvest garden with tomatoes, greens, asparagus, green beans, peppers, okra and/or, my personal favorite, herbs and spices. It doesn’t stop there, though. The possibilities for food and food dishes are practically limitless.

Here are some examples of what you can do with these fresh foods:

  • Shish kebabs
  • Fried okra
  • Grilled green beans/asparagus (wrapped in tin foil)
  • BBQ sauce made from homegrown tomatoes and spices
  • Seasoned meats

Activity/Relaxing Area

There are four stages in the grilling process; prep, grill, eat and relax. Steps one and three you are busy preparing the food and then eating it, respectively, but steps two and four offer plenty of downtime (obviously step four is given). You’ll need something to do while grilling and somewhere to relax after eating. What better place to set up a designated activity/relaxing area than in your backyard?

One word for you: hammock. Just picture yourself lounging in a hammock on a nice spring day.

Need I say more?

It doesn’t have to be a hammock, however, but you’d be crazy not to consider one. Just find something that’s suitable for you. For all I know, you’d get a swimming pool, a horse shoes game installed or some other activity. What I’m trying to say is, find your own hammock. As long as you’re enjoying yourself during and after the grilling process, that’s what it’s all about.

Spring time is already upon us, but it’s not too late to have all of the above in your backyard. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned veteran or an amateur. The main thing to take away from this is to get outside, make good use of your backyard and eat some delicious food, primarily BBQ if you can. And don’t forget to relax while you’re at it.

My programmer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on a number of websites for about a year and am nervous about switching to another platform. I have heard fantastic things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
