5 Ways to Prepare Great Wings

You just got back from the store with everything you need to throw a great summer barbeque. You have burgers, brats and chicken wings, along with all the great sides and snacks that go along with it. Burgers and brats are taking prime spot on the grill, as they should, but what about those wings? How do you prepare them? There are many different ways to prepare and cook wings including the grill, but here are 5 outstanding techniques to make wings:

Smoked

Smoking your wings is a great way to give them a unique smoky flavor that will also give them fall off the bone tenderness. While this process requires having a smoker, it is a mouth-watering way to prepare your wings.

In order to smoke your wings you will need hardwood chips for the smoker, dry rubs, seasonings and wings. Put your dry rubs in a sealable bag with the wings and shake it around to coat them all. For best flavor let them marinate in the fridge for 24 hours. After that, soak the hardwood chips in water and turn the smoker on to about 250-300 degrees. Turn the wings periodically until they have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees and you’ll be set to enjoy some tasty, flavorful smoked chicken wings!

Grilled

Grilling your wings is a very quick and easy way to prepare your wings. In fact, it is also a healthier solution to grill your wings, but still enjoy the tasty flavors that they have to offer with a great sauce.

You can choose to marinate your wings if you want, but you will definitely want to add sauce when you are grilling them. First marinade your wings for 24 hours. When you’re ready to cook, set the grill on medium heat, and have some water nearby just in case the grill flares up. Grilled wings are better than charred wings and that’s what will happen if they continuously flare up by the flame. Cooking time takes about 15 to 20 minutes, so stay near the grill and turn them frequently to avoid burning them.

Deep Frying

Deep-frying your wings is probably the quickest way to prepare your wings, as well as one of the most flavorful ways to cook them. Since you are submerging them in fat, it gives them a real juicy, tender flavor.

First select your choice of marinade, and let your wings soak in it for 24 hours. When ready to cook, you’ll need to batter the wings using flour or breadcrumbs. While doing this, it would be a good idea to heat up the fryer to 375 degrees. Once it’s reached the temperature, gently drop the wings into the fryer. Cooking time typically takes about 10-15 minutes, so make sure you turn them once while frying them. Repeat with your remaining wings and enjoy!

Twice Frying

Twice frying your wings helps lock in the flavor of your wing sauce while also giving the wing a crispy crunchy texture. This style of preparing your wings is like getting the best of both worlds; you get great flavor and texture.

First step is to prep your marinade with whatever ingredients you choose to use. Let the wings sit out 10-15 minutes before placing them in the fryer so they can reach room temperature. Cold wings cool the oil and colder oil doesn’t crisp. Next, heat your fryer to about 300 degrees and fry the wings in batches at this temperature for about 6-8 minutes until they are all done. After this, increase the temperature to about 350 degrees, and fry all the wings in batches again for 2-4 minutes. After this toss your wings in your marinade, serve them and enjoy.

Baked

Baked wings are a healthier alternative to deep fried wings, but they take much longer to prepare and are not as crispy either. Prepare your marinade in advance and let the wings marinate for about 24 hours, and you’ll be ready to start baking.

First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Once its ready, place your wings in a single layer on a baking sheer lined with tin foil. Season the wings a little bit, and bake for 20 minutes. After the first 20 minutes toss the wings in your sauce so they are completely covered, then return the wings to the oven for further baking. Bake for 10 minutes, turning them once, and then turn the oven on broil for the remaining 10 minutes to get the wings that perfect crispy texture. After this, remove the wings from the oven, serve and, as always, enjoy.
