First BBQ Chicken Ever

BBQ. Yes, it is delicious. Yes, there are a few ways of doing it. But for us newbies, what does it take to be an expert? Well, I think the real question about BBQ’ing should start with: is it easy or is it hard to do? I think the answer would depend on the BBQ’er.

As a first-time BBQ’er, I think it was easy, but very stressful. I had my chance to BBQ my first set of chicken on a charcoal BBQ grill just a couple of weeks ago, actually.

Here was the scenario:

The tenant, Dominique, downstairs started up the charcoal BBQ grill. He offered me the choice to “bring anything from upstairs and cook if you want.” At first, I was going to pass because I have NEVER BBQ’ed before, and my BBQ man wasn’t home and uncontactable (if that were a word, that is what he was). But then I thought to myself, is it really that hard?

There was the question (like I said, the real question), and I decided to find out. My chicken was frozen unfortunately, but according to Dominique, I had until the coals burned white anyway.

That became the first thing I learned about charcoal BBQ’ing: the coals must be white before you cook on them. One of the reasons I found for why that’s important is due to the chemicals of the lighter fluid. One person said, “When the coals start to turn white then the starter fluid is burned off and they are safe.” That makes sense. It also seems that if the coals are white, they are very, very hot and ready for cooking. That makes sense too, and may be more of the real reason.

So, back to my chicken.

I had to wait until the chicken thawed in the hot water I put the breasts in. Took a while, but they were done about the time of the coals. I grabbed the BBQ sauce and the raw chicken and made my way downstairs. I didn’t Google anything. I didn’t ask anyone. I just knew I was going to wing it, and see what happened.

My Process

  1. I put the raw chicken (no, no seasoning) on the grill and let them cook. After the breasts looked cooked through, I turned the chicken over and put BBQ sauce on the cooked part while the under part cooked.
  2. I waited until it was cooked through on that side, then flipped the BBQ side down and put more BBQ on top. I did this a few times for both sides for the different pieces.
  3. I realized that the chicken was cooking differently than I thought, not like I knew better either way, but I still cut the breasts into strips and turned the pieces on their sides to cook too.

Now, whether this was the best way or not, I don’t know, but it worked and tasted delicious if I do say so. Since we were grilling, we had some other food on the grill too and just ate standing there while the next pieces cooked. I ate my chicken in strips with my hands, and I was very happy with my first-ever BBQ chicken.

So, is BBQ’ing easy? Yes, it was. But the stress of “is the chicken done?” and “did I just drip BBQ sauce every where?” and then again “is the chicken done?”…definitely made it seem more difficult than it was.

I had an absolute blast, and will definitely be doing that again. Gotta love the summer time.
