Grilling Accessories Every Grill Master Needs

So you’ve finally decided to buy a grill and start serving up all kinds of barbecued fun. But what tools and equipment should today’s cutting-edge grill master have at the ready? Don’t even think about grilling without these immensely helpful accessories:

The basics – Gripping tools such as tongs help you grab and move everything from charcoal briquets to that piece of chicken in urgent need of turning. You’ll also need a large, reasonably stiff spatula that can hold a fair amount of weight, allowing you to flip even large cuts of meat quickly and efficiently. If you want to grill kebabs, don’t forget to purchase some metal or bamboo skewers. A thermometer will tell you when the internal meat temperature has reached the desired meat level; you’ll get the most accurate results from a state-of-the-art digital thermometer such as the Maverick ET732.

Tools for easier handling – Grilling whole vegetables or fish can prove tricky unless you have a grill basket to contain them. A typical grill basket consists of a hinged wire-metal “cage” with a handle; simply place the item in need of grilling inside, lower the top half onto it, and stick the whole thing on the grill. If you grill “skin-on” filets of fish, get yourself a cedar plank as a cooking surface for the filets. Results include not only moister fish but also a welcome hint of wood smoke. If you want to grill very thin cuts of meat evenly, you can purchase a grill press. This simple metal weight holds the meat flat while it cooks.

Cutting, shredding and tenderizing aids – The more of these accessories you have handy, the more easily you can prepare your meats for grilling. While you can use all sorts of marinades and tenderizing rubs to start the process along (see below), an old-fashioned tenderizing tool will knock that chop or filet into shape with extreme prejudice. You can also shred your own pork, beef, chicken or other meat without relying on your local deli department if you have a meat shredder. These handheld tools have sharp tongs, rather like forks on steroids, that allow you to pull the meat into shreds with minimal effort.

Rubs, herbs, spices and sauces – You can find lots of recipes out there for concocting the ideal rubs for beef, chicken, pork and other meats — but in the meantime, keep a good all-purpose rub readily available. Bad Byron’s Butt Rub has made waves as a popular choice, and it’s gluten free. A nice, relatively neutral barbecue sauce will please a wide variety of palates when entertaining. Even ordinary lemon juice can add a pleasant flavor to chicken or fish. Oh, and if you don’t have a basic spice tray loaded up with all the old standbys, get one — and yes, that includes salt and pepper!

The proper attire – How can you do the work of a master chef if you don’t look and feel like one? Well, just as you’d expect to find the best selection of office furniture from a store that specializes in it, you can get a wide range of grilling attire from specialty shops such as — including several pithy Attitude Aprons and even a traditional white chef’s hat. Remember to buy a few pairs of grill mitts!
